Public Transportation
Employers and Employees

Did you know?

  • Federal law allows employers to use pre-tax income to purchase monthly public transportation fare.  If a business chooses to offer this pre-tax commuter benefit to its employees, the company simply deducts the requested amount from employee income to purchase the fare in the form of a pass, ticket book, or voucher.
  • Transportation benefits are a low-cost wage enhancement.  Where wage increases are limited, transportation benefits effectively provide a monthly salary boost by reducing transportation costs through company subsidy or employee paid option.
  • Traffic congestion, air pollution, and environment degradation are regarded as major concerns.  Companies who address these issues are regarded favorably by the public as leaders, good companies to work for, and community-focused corporate/business neighbors.
  • Adding transportation benefits enhances a company’s overall benefits package.  Transportation benefits cost less than other regular benefits, but employees often use them more regularly, making them highly valued.  Even if employees do not take advantage of these benefits, they remind employees that transportation options are available.  Given the cost of hiring and re-training even a single employee, this low-cost benefit could easily pay for itself.
  • Limited parking can limit company growth potential, use up customer parking space, and add maintenance costs.  Encouraging public transportation use by employees can reduce these expenses.
  • Public transportation lowers the number of employees driving alone, which is often associated with lower employee morale.  By providing a public transportation source for numerous employees, opportunities for interaction away from the job setting occur and employees enjoy the benefits of the camaraderie
